My Personal Statement

From school fayres to football matches, disco's to cake sales, we are surrounded by events everyday, they can make people feel a range of emotions, I realised that the reactions people share whilst attending those events have made me want to create more and more. Having been involved in events throughout my life I have developed myself into part of the local working force and organisational teams.
Over the past few years I have been involved with groups such as Blueprint 22 and Esteem Youth Charity. I have taken part in organising and creating awards ceremonies as well as charity events, allowing me to work on my local connections, communication skills and team work. As both groups' service users include disabled young people I had to ensure that everything was accessible and safe for all those attending.
My health has also had a big impact on the events that I have been involved in. When I was 14 I was diagnosed with Epilepsy, around this time I felt completely alone because I didn't know anyone my age going through the same thing. Since then I have been included in setting up a support group with Epilepsy Action, the idea of these sessions was to reduce loneliness in the local Epileptic community by coming together to discuss their lives. These could include their health or about what had been happening since the last meeting. We also carried out some fundraising for Epilepsy Awareness within the sessions by dressing up, making cakes, putting up balloons and bunting that were all coloured purple for 'Purple Day'.
In 2018 I was part of the team for the first Worthing Pride. During this I took the initiative to create wheelchair access, along with this I was involved with the local community's festival. My roles covered planning the layout including where the horses used within the re-enactment would be placed in addition to the stalls and entertainment. I spent the length of the festival making sure that the stalls holders had everything they needed, and dealt with any requests they had. I learnt how to pace myself as well as dealing with customers. Although the days were long and the weather changed, I found that I enjoyed every moment and learnt that not everything will go your way. I also learnt to double check everything that you book to ensure that you are on the same page.
In my spare time I am a member of a local football team, this has taught me patience and commitment plus how to support others. As a goalkeeper it has also made my communication skills stronger, together with developing my leadership skills. Playing football since I was a child I have enjoyed being part of a team, working with others and would like to progress into refereeing and managing a girls football team so that others can enjoy the same experience that I have had. I also enjoy drama; in Christmas 2019 I was a last minute addition to the crew for Durrington Theatrical Society's 50th Anniversary Pantomime. During the week of production I was a Stage Assistant, a position that I had never done before. Besides this I came to enjoy myself whilst meeting new people and making sure each of the props were in the correct place for each scene. This meant that I had to concentrate and maintain attention at every moment of each performance. I enjoyed the experience so much that in the new year I joined the society.
I believe that this course will help me develop the skills that I already possess whilst also teaching me more, so that I will be able to continue towards working within the management sector. I hope that you will consider my application to your university; I am looking forward to not only the course but also joining your student union so that I can use my multiple experiences so that the other students can get the most out of their experiences at your university.
